Do you care about not being told of brands endorsed by salons? {Your Opinion}

Sometime before my wedding, I had inquired about body polishing prices with many of the salons around. When I used to ask them about the brand of the products they would use, the answer invariably was we do not reveal the brands we use, madam.

I hate it when anyone does that to me. Where do the consumer rights act go at this point of time? I think it is very important to preserve the transparency in their business as well as to uphold the trust of a customer that none of the salons shrink from revealing the products they use. Ultimately it is us who are paying obscene amounts and for what, we are not sure!!

Anyways, being the cynical me, I always see the other side of the picture. What if they are telling us one brand and using something else. Because, it is not like they put up all the products in front of us, right? They put a bit of amount of all those products into handy utensils and then come to the service room. Who knows what goes where?

What do you say? Do you think it is smart to not disclose so as to keep the customer guessing and keep coming back to the salon for THE amazing treatments or never know about the product which induced such horrible reactions on their skin, if any?

Loving / Using It Vol. 4 - Dabur Vatika Enriched Olive Hair Oil

Dabur Vatika Enriched Olive Hair Oil at Perfect Skin Care for you

Donchya think Monday is a better day to start over than waiting for the start of the new month? Coincidentally, the new month starts tomorrow. And, I am a day ahead. Reason being this review should have been done a month back but due to other preoccupations, I was lazy and busy.

And, thanks to the brand for being so generous as to provide me with two bottles of the product, I could use it for a longer time and come back with a thorough-er review. In fact, these past two months have subjected my hair to a very cruel regime so I can talk about the product effects more clearly.

Ingredients as specified on the product
Vegetable Oils including Olive oil, Bhringraj, Hibiscus and Aloe vera extracts 90%, Isopropyl Myristate, Cyclomethicone, Almond Protein Ester, Sugandit Dravya, Vitamin E Acetate, Avobenzone, Antioxidant-TBHQ and C.I.47000,26100,61565

Dabur Vatika Enriched Olive Hair Oil at Perfect Skin Care for you
  • Smells nice. That is the first thing I noticed! It has Sugandhit dravya as one of the ingredients. And, its not overly strong so that saves the day!!
  • Not travel-friendly. One of the bottles leaked while the package came to me even after being wrapped pretty securely.
  • Inexpensive at Rs 60 for 100ml and Rs 110 for 200ml. And, available everywhere.
  • Makes Hair Shiny. No, it does not protect my hair when I am hell bent on damaging it but the days I use the oil and wash off my hair, I can see how shiny and soft it gets!! But, unless I care for my hair regularly, the product will not do anything more than that.
  • No, I do not think it helped with any hair fall reduction. And, more often than not, your hair falls because of the dirt accumulated on the scalp so regular hair wash helps keeping hair fall in check. Try it!!
  • Gets washed off easily. It does not need loads of shampoo or tons of water to wash off so environment friendly :D
  • Only, it should have been packaged in pearlpet bottles or better yet, a glass bottle. The one right now is not of a very good quality.
  • Not entirely Herbal. As specified in the Ingredient list, it has chemicals, especially, a silicone which might be responsible for the shine it imparts temporarily.
Loving / Using It : Using It

Overall Verdict
Do give the product a try. It definitely is one of the better hair oils in the market. What do you think? Would you like to use it?

From the Archives : Exercises for Healthy and Beautiful Eyes {Eye Care}

Hope you are all enjoying your vacation.

I wrote this post during the New Year vacation of 2009.

Well, today I have something really useful to tell you all. Its about cleaning the eyes. We all know the importance of keeping our eyes dust-free and giving them time to relax. Morning eye exercises are most important to keep eyes in good condition. There are various exercises which you can do.

Staring at an Object
Stare at a far away object without blinking your eyes till they begin to water. It will sting badly if you are a starter, but, you get used to it gradually. This is one of the best exercises to remove the toxins from eyes and also improves your self-confidence.
    Tip: Try holding the eyelids with your fingers if you are not able to stare without blinking.

    I have not done this since I wrote the post. Guess, its back to basics!!

    Tighten and Relax
    Close your eyes tightly and pull all your face muscles in a taut condition for 5 seconds. Relax. Rub your palms together to warm them and place them on your eyes for 5 seconds. Repeat the procedure 10 times.

    This works really fantastically.

    Simple Eye Movements
    Look towards extreme right and then extreme left without blinking and without moving the head. Just move the eye balls. Repeat 5 times. Blink several times. Look up and then down. Repeat 5 times. Blink. Look diagonally up on left and then, diagonally down on right. Repeat 5 times. Blink. Follow the same with diagonal right up and diagonal left down. Repeat 5 times. Blink. Finally, rotate your eyes, first, in clockwise and, then, in anti-clockwise direction. Blink several times.
      Also, do not forget that when we stare at our laptops, we actually FORGET to blink!! Yes, that is true. So, remember to move away from the computer for 5 minutes every once in an hour. Use that time to gobble down some fluids into the system. Sitting at laptop also drains your eye and makes them dry and itchy!

      These exercises are enough to keep your eyes and the skin around it in good health. There are many others which you can try out. Do not forget to blink. Blinking keeps the eyes in watery condition and eliminates the toxins. The more you blink, better your eyes will look.

      And, do not forget to wash your eyes with triphala infusion. It is so soothing for the eyes and apparently also improves the eye sight!

      Organic Surge Daily Care Facewash {Product Review}

      Guest Post by Roshni

      A big thanks to Swati for letting me do a guest post :) Hope you all like it! [Me: I should be thankful to you, Rosh, instead!]

      After my Dove Beauty Moisture face wash got over, I decided to order the Organic Surge Daily Care face wash since I had read a lot about it. The one tempting factor of this face wash was the rose geranium oil which is one of the ingredients of the face wash. I love anything that smells of or contains roses and so I had to give this face wash a try!

      Price: Rs 660 (Got it for INR528 from medplusbeauty.com)

      Quantity: 200ml

      Ingredients

      My Experience
      I will start off by saying I have become a big fan of this face wash! And this is not only due to the rose smell ;-) The face wash has all natural ingredients with no SLES or parabens. I find this to be another big attraction. It of course smells like roses – more like a gulkand smell. This is very refreshing.

      The face wash is not very runny nor creamy. It is a golden yellow in colour and lathers very well. I take a pea sized amount in my wet palm, rub it between my hands to generate lather, and then apply it to my face and neck. I then rub it gently and in a circular motion over my face and neck and wash it off.

      My skin feels squeaky clean but not dry. It feels hydrated and soft. Also, my face tends to get small boils on the cheek bones and near the nose every few days if I don’t apply an antibacterial cream every 2-3 days. But since I have started using this face wash, the appearance of the boils has reduced and I do not need to use the antibacterial cream for many days at a time. So I am completely overjoyed!

      Pros
      • A small amount works a lot. This face wash will easily last me 6 months, I guess. I got it in April and little more than half is still left and that is with my husband using it half the time!!
      • The rose smell! – even people who do not like rose smell or have a sensitive nose can use this cause the smell does not linger.
      • Makes my skin squeaky clean without drying it.
      • Reduces the appearance of boils.
      • Comes in a pump dispenser bottle with a cap on top. So very easy to get the face wash out and also travel friendly.
      • Contains natural ingredients which are definitely proving very good for my skin.

      Cons
      • Availability (only available online)
      • Expensive? – I don’t think so cause it will last really long as I said above and is well worth the price!

      So have you used this face wash? How do you like it?

      Me: You have definitely sold me over the product, Rosh! Its on my list!

      Blogging Series Vol. 9 - Reviving Old Posts!

      If you have been blogging for a year or more, you would realize that any old post is a bane for the blogger. If one has blogged about a trending topic, it is no longer in vogue. If one has talked about some beauty tip, one would like to make sure it reaches every new reader who joins the blog. And, so on. So, how does one make sure that all those previous posts receive equal viewership as well?

      Granted that some of your old posts would be a legend and come what may, the traffic to those posts would always remain unbeatable. You would love to see those numbers for your current posts as well but somehow that never happens. That may be simply due to the fact that you have inadvertently placed great many number of keywords in those posts!

      If you think I am speaking latin and greek, please excuse me. In laymen terms, once you have written and published the post, your responsibility with the old post is not over. You should consistently modify it and update it so that it is fresh and consistent with your current blog layout.

      You must have already noticed my two previous posts, they were the long forgotten ones lying in the archives! In fact, they were the first two posts when I had started blogging. I had been thinking since quite long that I should bring out those posts again but could not find out the best way to do so. It was then I came across the simple tip of republishing the blog posts by changing the time stamp.

      This ensures that your old post has been published as new without changing the URL of the post so that any backlinks to the post are not lost! Also, this ensures your readers get to read the things which they might have missed out on or have not come across since they have joined the blog!

      But, doing this has one major disadvantage. Your blog layout and blog language might not remain same. If the post which you would republish is very old, like in my case, the language and the structure of the post would be very very different. At that point of time, you have two action items. Either rewrite the entire post, update it or create a new one. Or, edit the post with your current thoughts about it and publish it as it was. And, any changes you might have regarding the post, create a new one and give a backlink to the other post.

      This way you would have created new content for your blog and the inter-linking among the blog posts helps boost the page rank. Ok, I have to say this that reviving the old posts might not be the best thing in the world. Why? You might actually get bored editing it or you would be shocked by how raw you were in your hey day!

      What do you think? Does republishing your old blog posts really help?

      From the Archives : Oil Cleansing Method {DIY}

      So continuing in the same series, let me bring this long lost post. This is one of the very much recommended beauty practices for both oily and dry skin beauties. It helps with tan removal to acne healing. And, its amazing as it removes makeup and cleanses the skin and detoxifies it. Since it is a little intense treatment for the skin, it should be done only once or AT MAX twice a week.

      Yes, by the name, you can make out it uses oil. So, please do not be afraid or prejudiced. I have always maintained that oil is amazing for skin when you know how to use them and which ones to use. So, here is a tip - Always use cold-pressed and extra-virgin or virgin oils whether it is olive or coconut or almond or sesame. Also, sesame oil is the one which is recommended heavily in ayurveda as apparently it is the only oil which can pass into the blood stream. Anyways, let us start with the post and please let me know of the doubts and clarifications.

      A few days ago I had talked about OIL CLEANSING. Well, let me introduce to you something which I stumbled across a few days ago. I tried it and trust me, its amazing. I do not know how well it removes make up but it makes your skin squeaky clean without drying it. Rather, it leaves your skin smooth and supple. And, your skin glows the next day. You would love yourself.

      It removes makeup fantastically as any oil would.

      Before proceeding, let me give a little background into OCM method. Oil is said to dissolve all the grime and dirt and dead skin cells and blackheads and what not. So, in this method, we especially use castor oil because castor has the most cleansing properties of all oils. Since castor is a drying oil and is extremely thick and concentrated it is not advisable to use it naked on the skin. It should be diluted with some other oil. Many people in the west prefer olive but I would suggest almond or coconut or sesame. No personal grudges with olive but it is something I do not really find amazing. If it works for you, go ahead!

      Procedure:
      • Start by keeping everything close to you. You would need a dry smooth cotton wash cloth (not too harsh for your skin), a bottle containing castor oil and olive oil mixed in a proportion suitable to your skin* oils and running hot water.
      • Apply oil generously to your face and neck skin and massage it well the oil into your skin well using firm hands for around 5-10 minutes. It feels relaxing and is soothing for your face muscles. Exercise your cheek bone, jaw bone, nose, chin, forehead and eyes (use ring finger for eyes). The finger movements should be outwards and upwards towards the ear from the chin, cheeks, nose and upper lip area.
      • After massaging to your heart's content, soak the wash cloth in hot running water and cover the face apply it on to your face. Keep the warmth of wash cloth to the point you can bear. Make sure the cloth is not too hot and let the warmth seep into your skin. Keep it on the face until it cools down. Then, wipe your face to remove the oil. You will find a lot of oil gone from the face. Wash the wash cloth in running hot water and repeat this step until all the oil is wiped off from the face and neck. Use the same wash cloth.
      • Wash and soak the same wash cloth under hot running water for sometime to clean it and saturate it. Again apply it your face, keep till it cools and then, wipe away your face. Repeat this cycle till you feel your skin is clean. 3-4 times should be enough.
      • After you are done, DO NOT use any facewash. You can apply moisturizer according to the need of your skin. In place of moisturizer, you can apply a drop of the same oil used to cleanse your face. If it does not feel dry and tight, do not apply anything on to your face. Your face needs to breathe. Go and have a nice sleep.
      Next morning, you need not cleanse your face. A wipe with a wash cloth or a splash of cold water is enough to clean it. Your skin would be glowing. Oil cleansing not only removes grime, dirt and make up from your face, but also, the blackheads and blemishes. This procedure should not be done too frequently. I think 2-3 times is fine in a week. Care should be taken not to scratch the skin.

      Go and check it out for yourself. Have a happy cleansing.

      * Remember, castor oil is quite thick and can be drying for the skin if used in large quantities. It has cleansing properties but is too strong on skin if used alone. That is why you need another light oil to dilute it. You can also use jojoba oil. For the mixture of oil, you can use 75-25 castor-olive oil combination for normal skin. You can experiment with different proportions till you find the one suiting your face.  The proportion of mixture should be such that for dry skin people, castor oil should be less in proportion like 50-50 or 60-50 and people with oily skin can have 80-20 as the proportion. But, since every skin is different in its needs, you should find out the right one for yourself. It would take trial and error but remember one rule, do not use too much of castor oil. It will dry your skin irrespective of its type.

      PS: Italicized and striked paragraphs/sentences are new additions. Rest of the post is as it was published earlier.

      From the Archives : Growing Long Eyelashes {DIY}

      Please note that this is an old post which I am republishing for the benefit of the new readers. Interestingly, I am starting the new series From the Archives from today. I shall be posting at least one old post every week after editing them, if necessary. Hope you will like it.

      Have you ever been jealous of babies or kids, especially boy kids and even guys. They always have better lashes! At least all those I have met specially have amazing eyes and even better eyelashes. I know of only one girl who has amazingly thick and long lashes and she has great hair as well!!

      Well, growing long eyelashes seem to be too difficult. Everyone wants beautiful eyes framed with long and lush eyelashes. Such eyelashes are not a natural gift to everyone but you need not despair. Some patience and regularity in your routine can help you achieve that task. To be frank, I do not know whether you can grow that thick eyelashes as you watch on the screens when you look at your favorite actress but definitely, you can make them better than their present condition.

      Oh my gosh! When I read that the first thing which came to my mind was was I really that bad??? Well, let us look at the silver lining. I have improved so much!! So, lets get back to the post. Yeah, getting great eyelashes is not exactly easy but it is do-able.

      Apply castor oil every night. Be patient. The results would not be seen over night. The eyelashes growth cycle completes in about two months so by end of those months you can definitely see your eyelashes in a better shape.

      Also, coconut works great. Do not try almond, though. It stings the eyes badly! But, coconut or castor, both do not sting the eyes.

      And, before leaving, vaseline does no good for the eyelashes so please do not waste time using that remedy. It just makes your eyelashes wet and sticky and when they are wet, the eyelashes look longer so basically, what you see after applying vaseline is just an illusion and I'm not even sure whether you should actually apply vaseline to the delicate skin around the eyes.

      Also, I have read so much about vaseline being great but I have not tried the method. What I have written above is probably not correct either. But, if the remedy works for you, go ahead with it without any qualms.

      PS: All the paragraphs in italics are update and the regular text is the old one!

      Areev Natural Handmade Soap Wild Orchid {Product Review}

      So, let me introduce you to another brand - Areev. You can check out the site here. Now, how I came across the brand is through Good Seeds market. Good Seeds is an organization which holds a monthly market in Hyderabad and promotes natural, handmade and organic products through fair trade. Check out their site here

      Price: Rs 60

      Pros
      gentle on skin
      smells nice
      lasts long enough!

      Cons
      does not really moisturize

      Ingredients List - olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, jasmine and ylang ylang EO

      My Experience
      Since I have started on the handmade soaps a couple of years back, I have been hooked on them and I love trying out every XYZ brand I come across. And, fortunately each one of them has been better than previous! And, then I came across the Goodseeds and I got many more brands to try out! (Oh yes, there are many other products coming up!)

      Like all the handmade soaps, this one also is gentle on skin and feels nice. It says wild orchid but it actually has the essential oils of jasmine and ylang ylang which try to replicate the elusive orchid smell!!

      The soaps lathers decently in water but still does not melt away! It has lasted me almost 20 days with two uses each day and still there is some more of the soap left!

      The best part of the soap is it is pretty inexpensive when it comes to handmade soaps at 60 bucks as opposed to the others being in the range of 90-100 and above and they do not last as long!

      Ok, you do need to moisturize after having a bath with the soap. But then the weather is getting dry in Hyderabad so can not rely on the soap alone.

      There are a few variants of the soaps available from the brand and the next I am trying is cucumber mint. Will let you know about that soon enough but for now see if you can try this one :)

      Availability
      As far as I know you can only order it through Good Seeds. Unfortunately, Good Seeds delivers only locally :(

      Have you tried out Good Seeds or Areev soaps?

      5 FAQ's on Conditioner and Hair Care {Five Series}

      I have been really taking care of my hair this year and I am so happy about it that I have been boring you time and again :D Anyways, this was requested by Pallavi and it has been a long time in coming. So, here it goes!

      What is a Conditioner?
      A treatment which follows the shampooing routine to restore the oils of the hair after washing it. Shikakai is the traditional conditioner which was used to compensate for the harshness of reetha or soapnuts.

      Now a days, we have two classes of conditioners. One is a post-shampoo treatment and another is pre-shampoo treatment and one can go for either home remedies or get the commercially available products!

      The home remedies are nourishing for hair and the commerical products have hair-friendly ingredients or ones which coat the hair strands to shield it from the external elements. You also get products which claim to restructure the hair collagen using chemical compounds like peptides and keratin.

      How to apply the conditioner?
      Well, this is something I have already discussed but it is still a huge doubt for me. So, the simplest thing I do is divide my hair into two sections and take a dollop of conditioner and smooth on one side and repeat the same for other. I do this very gently but still some hairs do fall so I gently remove them and wash them off.

      I do not use comb in the shower as many people suggest. I think it is a bad idea because hair is most delicate when wet and howsoever gentle one might be, its totally impossible not to break the hair.

      How often should conditioner be used?
      Well, generally, the answer would be every time you wash your hair. But, honestly, I do not use it every time. Sometimes, I am just too lazy or sometimes I want to treat my hair to henna or something else so I simply skip. In those times, I make sure I do a leave-in treatment for the hair.

      For oily hair as well, finding a conditioner which is not heavy for hair is very important! Or, they can make do with a leave-in treatment and some people do a pre-conditioning like applying egg or henna or curd or some other hair pack for an hour before wash it off.

      I think how often you need to condition also depends on the quality of your shampoo. If it a drying type, you would obviously need the conditioner but if the shampoo simply cleanses the hair and doesn't remove the natural oils, one can make do without conditioner.

      I have been using SLS-free shampoos for long and yes I do think I can make do without conditioners if I want. But, a drop or two of some oil acts a leave-in agent in my hair otherwise my hairs do dry out a lot but then my hair is not oily but dry and curly/wavy as well.

      Does skipping conditioner affect hair?
      Yes, actually! I have seen that personally and have mentioned it already on the blog. But, this point applies only when you are missing the leave-in treatment as well. The hair is prone with split ends and thin hair especially on the ends which leads to breakage! For hair to remain beautiful, both internal and external nourishment are equally important.

      Eat omega3 rich foods and foods rich in Vitamin B and E. They help in hair growth and keep hair moisturized and hydrated all the time. Eating protein-rich foods also helps in maintaining body of the hair strands. And, protect hair from the external damaging elements like pollution and dust and sun.

      How to select a conditioner for my hair?
      Now, this is the most difficult question to answer! There are no guidelines to select a product which will suit. So, I can just mention a few salient points! First, it is not necessary that the shampoo and conditioner should be from the same brand and range. If your hair reacts well to a particular shampoo and some other conditioner, go ahead with that as well.

      Second, always buy the products depending on your hair type and issues. You can always rotate them one after another as well like using a volume boosting conditioner and then color protecting conditioner and then conditioner for curly hair if all those issues pertain to your hair condition.

      And, lastly, in my opinion professional range products are always better investment if you are looking for some serious hair care. Yes, they are more expensive but then the companies spend quite a lot of amount in decent research. And, do not get involved into the good ingredients and bad ingredients debate because its just not worth it!

      So, these were my few pennies on the topic and hope the post is clear enough. I have written it with a muddle-head! Drop down your comments and see ya tomorrow :)

      Add your questions to the above-mentioned ones and let me know your answers as well for the questions above!

      Ayurvedic tips I have incorporated in my daily routine! {Health}

      Have you ever tried Ayurveda in your daily routine? I did it. It had started with one day my mom telling me to wash my eyes with the triphala infusion. She had seen it on some program which imparts the ayurvedic tips for healthy living. And, then, some other tip came and then something else! And, on and on.

      But then how many things can you incorporate in the routine so I just left it at that. But, these tips were something which were not so intrusive and could be followed easily. And, their benefits were too good to pass up. I have been doing these things on and off for the past one month or more. And, I can talk about the benefits I have seen in my skin or hair or body!

      Triphala Eye Wash
      Every morning right after I get up, I wash my eyes with the triphala infusion. And, the results?

      Brighter eyes, clearer eyes, whites are more prominent, eyes do not get dry, they do not get tired of staring at the laptop, and the best is yet to come - lesser finer lines under the eyes :D The infusion hydrates the skin there and makes it moisturized so that helps with lesser wrinkles and fine lines. Of course, moisturizer and sunscreen do their part as well :)

      How to make infusion?
      Take a 1/2 tbsp of triphala powder in a glass and dissolve it in glassful of water. Leave it overnight. Strain the morning and use it as eyewash.

      I have to warn you here that this infusion stains the washbasin and where it falls so when you are washing your eyes, get either eye wash cups or do something to prevent spilling.

      Almond Oil Nose Drops
      This has to be done just before dozing off!! Just a drop of almond oil in both of your nostrils and you are good to doze off into deeper realms. Results?

      Amazingly this helps with headaches, helps you sleep better, greases your air pipe and the nostrils, cleans them of any dirty things and the list is actually quite long. But, the main thing is deep and calm sleep for me and lesser headaches.

      How to use?
      Get a bottle of Badam Rogan and a dropper from the pharmacy. And, that is it. Keep them by your bedside and do not forget to use them.

      Oil Pulling
      This has to be the most heavy tip I have incorporated in my routine. And, I think it is difficult given that you have to take a tablespoon of oil in your mouth right after you get up and swish it for 20 minutes before throwing it off. And, yeah, the first time you do it, you WILL surely gag! Results?

      I am not sure if I really saw any benefits till now but I think its a routine which does not show the benefits immediately or even in the long run. The benefits are more internal and not visible. It sure does make my teeth more white and cleanse out the cough and phlegm from the body. Swishing for 20 minutes surely makes me feel wide awake but I doubt if it was supposed to be one of its benefits :D

      How to do it?
      Traditionally, sesame oil is used for this method. I use coconut oil, though. Take a table spoon and swish it all around the mouth gently without making your jaw hurt and then it will turn watery and foamy by the end of 20 minutes when you can spit it out. Rinse your mouth with salt water, preferably mineral or rock salts not the table salt. And, brush. Yes, it has to be done before brushing your teeth and on empty stomach right after you get up.

      The benefits are multi-varied. First, it is a detoxification ritual for the body. The oil pulls all the toxins and turns watery and foamy because of them. That is also the reason why you should not ingest even a bit of that oil and throw it all off and cleanse your mouth properly. Second, I think it is extremely helpful for people with respiratory issues as it helps clean the mucus canal and improves sinusitis issues and if you are suffering from cold, you can do this to get rid of the phlegm. It is also great to maintain the healthy teeth and gums and oral care. It helps prevent bad breath.

      That's it for me now. If I include any more tips in my daily routine, I shall surely let you know :)

      And, what about you? Do you practice ayurveda in your daily routines? Do you find them beneficial?

      5 Skin Care tips to deal with Roscea, Psoriasis and Eczema {Five Series}

      Every day there is one comment on the blog about wither of these skin disorders. And, my only answer to them is to consult a doctor and I really wish they do! The reason being these are problems which are best treated under medical supervision. If left untreated, these issues can aggravate and cause more harm to the skin in the long run!

      So, I came across an article by Dr. Perricone for these disorders while browsing through my mails. It is more a list of Do's and Donts' in such a case. So, let us begin.

      Sensitive Skin
      If you are suffering from any skin disorder, your skin is very very sensitive so avoid anything which can mildly be stinging for the skin. Exfoliation on the affected areas is a big no no. No alpha-hydroxy acids or any chemical peels or even the usage of fresh fruits in the skin care regime.

      Do not use any orange or tomato or lemon or papaya or pineapple juice on the face. Using retinoids and any other skin supplements like vitamin C serums or products containing hydroquinone are also discouraged. Anything which increases the sensitivity of the skin can aggravate the problem!

      Sunscreen
      Protect the areas from direct sunlight. Slather on a thick layer of sunscreen and reapply often. Physical Sunscreens are preferred as they generally trigger lesser allergies than the chemical sunscreens.

      Moisturizer
      Keep the affected areas moisturized using hydrating moisturizers or body oils or face oils. Often the scalp skin is also affected with these disorders in which case hair fall becomes a common problem. So, make sure that you keep the scalp moisturized using couple of drops of oil or aloevera gel. Coconut, almond, apricot oils work really well to moisturize the scalp!

      Also, it is important to keep the skin moisturized from inside. Eating a lot of omega rich foods is helpful. Or, taking Vitamin E rich foods. A table spoon of coconut oil everyday is also advised for improving the skin suppleness and hydration.

      Diet
      Another important thing to take care of is diet. Spicy food, alcohol and caffiene generally triggers allergies. Also, eating spices like ginger, garlic, turmeric are good for health. And add lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts and whole grains. Processed foods should be strictly avoided.

      Exercises
      Regular exercise is one of the keys of healthy living. It helps reduce stress levels and allows people to sleep deeply and calmly, among other things. And, helps with healthy flow of blood.

      Please add some other points to the post!

      PS: This post is supposed to be only a precautionary measure to prevent aggravating the already existing issue. It, by no way, should be taken as a treatment for the aforementioned disorders.

      The Body Shop Rainforest Coconut Hair Oil {Product Review}

      I have never been a fan of coconut oil but I have been using it for sometime to remove the sunscreen and that is all there to it! I did never really try coconut oil for hair seriously because I did not see it doing much for my hair. So, lets see how this product worked on me!

      Price: Rs 625 for 200ml

      Pros
      can be used as a leave-in treatment!
      gets washed out easily
      leaves subtle shine on the hair

      Cons
      very expensive!

      its a clear oil

      My Experience
      It always looked to me that doing the reviews are the easiest thing on Earth because you just have to use the product and write about it! No thinking and no brainstorming. Easy-peasy.

      And, then the reality crashes saying "What do you know? It is the most difficult part of blogging!" The blogger has to test a product in thousand possible ways and then list them down as to what passes the test and what doesn't!

      And, when it is a hair care product, it is even worse! So, forgive me if the review is too much or too less and please read on :)

      I have been testing the product since a month and I can safely say I hate the smell. The oil is clear and colorless with a cocoa-buttery smell. Its not like I am a fan of the coconut oil smell but cocoa butter smell is even worse. And, the ingredient list states fragrance as well. They might have done better with few hair nourishing essential oils instead!

      Anyways, barring that issue, I do not see any problem in the product. Incidentally, it is so different from coconut oil in texture probably because of the mix of all other oils. It is very less sticky and thick as compared to the regular coconut oil and does not weight down the hair if you apply as a leave-in serum. That is something I totally loved about the product.

      it has all sorts of oils other than coconut and pracaxi (Pentaclethra Macroloba Seed Oil)!

      Now, it says about some Pracaxi oil which comes from South America. The oil comes from the Pracaxi seeds and has high concentration of behenic acid which apparently is good for hair! Behenic acid is a saturated fatty acid which has smoothing properties. (Source: Wikipedia)

      Now, lets talk about how the product functions. Honestly, the product is so expensive that it will break your heart to use it as a hair oil. And, fortunately, I do not think I saw any difference in my hair when I used this oil as a pre-wash treatment. It did not contain the frizz or show any extraordinary difference compared to any other oil.

      oil does not come drop by drop from the fliptop cap!

      But, it was a hero when it came to post-wash treatment. You can easily skip the conditioner and use this product on a daily basis. Just two drops would be enough for mid-waist length hair and the leftover oil on the palms can be rubbed on the scalp. That prevents dryness of the scalp. And, even if you apply it everyday, your hair would not get weighed down.

      Oh I forgot to mention - whether the product is used as pre-wash treatment or a post-wash, it leaves the hair really soft and provides subtle shine to it which makes the hair look really healthy! Hair looks full of life and bouncy. Since I wash my hair on alternate days on weekdays, my hair behaves relatively well.

      Also, it brings out the color of your hair (if your hair is colored or naturally possesses some very interesting shade) which I totally loved. So, yes, it is a product which can be tried as a leave-in treatment. And, it will last you ages that way so you can spend on it in one shot as well :)

      PS: Product provided by brand.

      Does milk increase the weight? {Health}

      Ok, so this is a question for you all! What do you think? Milk or eating dairy products everyday increase the weight?

      Well, in my opinion, yes it does! I have been without milk for almost a year or more and I had noticed a drastic decrease in my weight. Also, its not only my experience but one of the guy colleague who is literally paranoid about weight attests the fact.

      Well, some do say that it actually depends on person to person as to what contributes in their weight increase or decrease. To a lot of extent, that is absolutely true!

      But, when it comes to milk, there are quite a lot of milk types - whole milk, toned, skimmed and what not! Honestly, I can't even understand what toned, doubled toned and skimmed are for but anyways they are different levels of milk processing.

      Now, whole milk has maximum amount of calories and skimmed non-fat milk has least amount. And, many people are used to adding sugar in milk so that adds extra calories to the body thus resulting in weight gain.

      On the other hand, it comes as a boon for underweight people. Drinking two glasses of milk a day can improve your weighty issues. Also, milk mainly contains proteins which improve the muscle mass. So, a healthy dose of exercise is required to fight off that muscle mass in unhealthy weight gain.

      Now before you start discontinuing milk, let me also state that since it is rich in proteins and helps in building the muscles, not taking milk on a regular basis can actually leave you weak and without energy in the long run. I have myself undergone the situation. I was wan and weak and irritable all the time!

      So, the best bet is to drink a glass of skimmed milk. But, also remember that excess processing of milk actually strips off the nutrients! So, honestly, I have no idea what to drink and what not. I as usual do not mind a lot of fat so I love whole milk :D And, btw, I should also add that some people claim milk and dairy products help lose weight!

      What about you? You like skimmed milk? Or, you prefer to do the no-milk show?

      Gynaec consultation before marriage {Bridal Files}

      I am reviving the bridal files after a long hiatus. As I have earlier also explained, writing about something which I have never been through does not really come easy to me. Now, how did this come?

      One of my colleague is getting married soon and we were just discussing about the various issues involved in a relationship. So, there are a few points I thought would be good if everyone knows about them.

      Pre-poning or Post-poning of Periods
      Well, having periods around the D-day is most inconvenient, not to mention it is forbidden to sit in pujas at that time! So, always keep a track of your periods during that time.

      Also, if they are by any chance falling around the same time, better consult a gyneac on how to postpone or prepone them. I would suggest preponing so that you are over with them when the actual ceremonies start.

      How to avoid conception?
      Well, this can be done before or after marriage. But, if you are sure you do not want to conceive right away, it is always good to consult a gyneac to know the ways of avoiding the errors. I would suggest the couple to go together!

      Medical Test before Marriage
      This is something I have discussed long before. Getting a thorough checkup of the reproductive system done beforehand for both bride and groom would avoid a lot of unfortunate events in the later life.

      These are a few pointers right now in my mind. Please feel free to add more to them. I know this might sound very obvious or you might die with embarrassment just thinking about the idea of discussing these issues with the prospective groom or bride but it is practical and its always good to be aware.

      What do you think? Should one go for such consultations or not?

      5 Oils I love for my Hair {Five Series}

      I am so stumbled by the writer's or shall we say bloggers block so I thought of one topic I would love to write about and suddenly, it popped. I love oils and I love taking care of my hair so combine them both and voila, oils for hair :D

      Ok, that was no rocket science but trust me, it is not easy to write a post with full conviction. So, one has to constantly either evolve their likings or stick ot something they believe fully in!! So, lets check out which oils I totally love using on my hair.

      Coconut Oil
      Not my first choice generally but it is said that coconut oil gets absorbed very easily into the hair. And, since I started to try TBS Rainforest Coconut Oil, I am liking it a lot. I am using it as a leave-in serum as well which is working out decently!!

      Almond Oil
      Ok, Rogan Badam has to be my favorite. It has revived my hair, after all.

      These were the bring oils so lets move to something exotic now!

      Grapeseed Oil
      It is supposed to stimulate hair follicles and improve hair growth so how could I pass this one? I included a few drops of rosemary EO and use 3-5 drops of the mix as scalp treatment for my hair after washing it. In case, you are wondering, it is not oily AT ALL!!

      Pomegranate Seed Oil
      Ok, this was part of my hair conditioning and frizz-fighting arsenal. And, of course, it sounds so exotic so I picked this up when I saw it on Soulflower. I used to use it as leave-in serum but can't say how much it has really helped my hair. Probably, more testing is required!

      And, now, lets move to the good old ayurveda!

      It is one oil in the recent times which has tamed my hair and has been giving it a healthy appearance. The one variant which I got recently is pretty non-sticky as opposed to the general belief that ayurvedic oils are extremely sticky so that's a plus!! In fact, in the recent days, I have been using few drops (2-3) of this oil as scalp treatment instead of the Grapeseed oil mentioned above!

      So, what about you? Which oils do you like? Have you used any exotic oils lately for the hair?

      Olay Total Effects 7 in One cream + serum duo SPF 15 {Product Review}

      I am doing this review as a part of blogadda program so I had to use it for 7 days and post the review. Unfortunately, the clever me totally skipped that part of the deal!!

      So, here goes a quick review of the product and I am extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to whomsoever it may concern. Also, please note that I have not tried the product for a month as I regularly do!

      Price: Rs 369 for 20gms

      Pros
      gets absorbed into the skin easily!
      doesn't feel heavy on skin!
      prevents skin from getting dull!

      Cons
      does not really stand tall on all it claims!!

      My Experience

      Well, for the starters, I do not like the fact that it has spf 15. Since it is an anti-aging product which is a cream-serum combo, it should have either been a night cream (I am sure Olay has something in that category as well) or have a higher sun protection factor if it was intended for morning use.

      Anyways, a moisturizer should not be used as a sunscreen so it works out perfectly. The product is really light on the skin provided you don't tend to overuse.

      A pea-size drop is enough to cover face and neck. It gets absorbed into the skin within seconds without leaving any greasy feeling. And, the result is a well-hydrated skin.

      Given that I have not been taking care of my skin prior to the arrival of this product, I did see some laugh lines along the mouth. The proper moisturizing from the product did help smoothen them. They are still there but less visible because of supple skin.

      One thing I noticed since I started with this product was that my skin was not getting dull by the end of the day which it had started to when it was peak summers. May be it is this product or the weather itself! Hyderabad has been awesome lately :)

      the seven claims! please click on the pic to enlarge and read them and i am sorry to not get a clear pic! next time I shall do better!

      But, sine the main ambition of the product is to address seven signs of aging, let me talk about how it fares on those grounds. The pic above shows the seven effects and it also claims to give more fairness.

      Honestly, I do not think I saw any difference on those seven claims! I have a few fine lines under the eye on which there was no effect but then it has been just like 10-14 days I have been using the product! Wrinkles need little more time to improve!

      On grounds of even skin tone, I do not think I saw anything either. When I apply the product, it helps brighten the skin but that is that! It does not lighten the skin tone or anything.

      I have few dark spots on the neck but unfortunately there is no improvement in them either! Now, there is change in the skin pores. When skin is adequately moisturized, pores do seem less in size so that is the only change I have seen!

      One thing more I have noticed is that the effects of the product are visible only as long as you keep on applying it. So, I think the product would be more effective when it is used along with its night time counterpart!

      can you see the yellow ribbons in the product? that's the serum at work!!

      My Verdict
      The product is worth being tried once. It might be a good moisturizer for all those who are searching for one! And, it can be used on oily or combination skin as well!!

      Have you tried out this product? Do share your experiences!

      Should you eat curd/yogurt at night? {Health}

      Well, so you would already be aware that dinner should be the lightest meal of the day! But since I miss a decently filling lunch, I miss all the important ingredients like curd and such which I make up for in my dinner.

      But, few months back some body warned me not to eat curd at night. That was because curd at night in winters is extremely cooling for the body. Also, curd is heavy on the stomach and doesn't get digested easily!

      And for people suffering with sinus issues, curd at night can lead to congestion and breathlessness as it pours the toxins into the lungs (that is not quite literally right but a metaphor)! Also, it can interfere with sleep.

      Ayurvedically as well, one is suggested to avoid curd at night. But if at all you are interested in having curd, mix a pinch of pepper powder. That's what I read somewhere! Also, it is best if you can manage buttermilk instead but curd mixed with sugar is a complete no no.

      Do you eat curd at night? I shall mix pepper powder from now on!!
